    Symantec unveils security outsourcing services

Security company launches two services aimed at IT outsourcing

By Rene Millman, 14 Dec 2006 at 10:50

Symantec is to launch a couple of new services aimed at enterprises looking to outsource IT functions.

Symantec Operational Services will allow enterprises to outsource essential IT functions to Symantec staff under customised service level agreements. Symantec said that the services can be deployed either at the customer's site or remotely, or a combinations of the two.

Symantec's Residency Services would see Symantec staff go to work for companies as an in-house security expert. These consultants would be on-site for a minimum of one year and help out on anything from management of backup and recovery infrastructure to overall project management.

Greg Hughes, executive vice president, Symantec Global Services said that risk, cost, and complexity associated with managing IT infrastructures have grown and there was a large demand from customers to provide an array of options that use "the deep expertise and best practices we've developed over time."

"These new services are a natural expansion of Symantec's long-standing expertise as a leading provider of remote Managed Security Services and provide flexible alternatives to help meet customers' needs," he said.

Analysts said that many enterprises not interested in full-scale outsourcing but would appreciate some outside expertise.

"Customer needs continue to evolve as the level of risk around managing IT infrastructure increases," said Doug Chandler, program director at analysts IDC. "Many enterprise organizations, while not interested in full-scale outsourcing, would like to build a long-term relationship with a strategic IT consulting partner that can help manage their critical IT processes around security and availability."
