Seagate unveils new 15K 2.5 inch drive
By Rene Millman,
Seagate is launching a new smaller, faster disk drive aimed at the server and datacentre market.
The 2.5-inch form factor drive is the fastest drive from the disk drive company spinning at 15K will be marketed at datacentres and organisations needing to cut down on space and power requirements.
HP recently validated the drive as being one of the world's fastest disk drives and has started shipping ProLiant servers with the new disks. According to Seagate, the drive is 70 per cent smaller than previous drives and uses 30 per cent less power consumption than any other 15K drive. Not only that it also claims that the drive has a reliability rating of 1.6 million hours Mean Time Between Failure (MBTF).
Analysts said that there is a shift by enterprises towards smaller form factor drives as companies and datacentres attempt to increase storage, while decreasing power consumption and cooling costs.
"The trend in IT is to scale down the physical size of components while scaling up capacity and performance," said John Rydning, research manager for hard disk drives at IDC. "Seagate's first generation 2.5-inch 15K-rpm hard disk drive is fitting with this trend, delivering fast I/O performance in a small package to meet the needs of demanding server applications."
