Top Linux groups join forces
By Nicole Kobie,
Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) and the Free Standards Group (FSG), two associations dedicated to advancing the Linux cause, today announced they will merge to form The Linux Foundation.
The merger is expected to be approved by both groups' memberships as early as next month.
The new foundation will continue its predecessors' work of sponsoring developers, providing legal services, offering a forum for collaboration, improving standardisation - and, hopefully, for the group's 70 members - helping Linux-based software compete with Windows.
"Computing is entering a world dominated by two platforms: Linux and Windows. While being managed under one roof has given Windows some consistency, Linux offers freedom of choice, customisation and flexibility without forcing customers into vendor lock-in," said Jim Zemlin, the new head of the group and former executive director of the FSG, in a statement.
The new group, which will have 45 employees, includes members from "every major company in the industry," including Red Hat, Hitachi, Novell, and Intel, as well as community groups, universities and end-users.
