Net heroes and villains unveiled at ISPA awards
By Maggie Holland,
The crème de la crème of the web gathered together last night to find out who the winners and losers of the coveted Internet Service Providers' Association (ISPA UK) awards were.
The ninth annual ISPA awards, held at the London Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square, are designed to acknowledge those who have done the most good - and harm - to the internet industry over the last 12 months.
The European Commission (EC) and commissioner Vivianne Reding - who has done much work to ensure users don't continue to get hit where it hurts by excess mobile roaming charges - beat off stiff competition from, among others, the
US government and the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), to be crowned Internet Villain of the Year.
Commenting on the 'win' and ISPA spokesperson said: "Commissioner Vivianne Reding and the European Commission received the award for foisting the most arcane set of rules yet seen for prior registration of .eu domains, requiring UK registered companies to submit legal affidavits to justify the authenticity of their business."
In contrast, Vodafone's Annie Mullins waked away with an accolade for being the Internet Hero of the Year for her efforts in trying to make the web a safer place, ahead of the likes of OfcomOfcom, the EU and the Home Office.
Other winners included UKFast as Best Business Host, Zen Internet as Best Business E-Mail, Datanet as Best Business Broadband and Claranet as Best Business ISP.
