Four out of five UK internet connections via broadband
By Nicole Kobie,
Nearly 80 per cent of UK connections to the internet are now via broadband, according to a survey of internet service providers (ISPs).
In its latest study of ISPs, the National Statistics department found that 79.2 per cent of connections are on broadband as opposed to dial-up as of December 2006, up from 75.8 per cent in the previous quarter.
According to a statement from National Statistics, the market share of broadband connections has been increasing since the survey began in 2001, "reflecting its growing popularity, widespread availability and changes to the connection packages offered by ISPs".
For the next quarter, the study has stopped differentiating between metered and unmetered dial-up connections, but now looks at broadband by the speed of the connection. As of December, 60.1 per cent of broadband connections had bandwidth levels under two megabits (Mb), 32.5 per cent were between 2Mb and 8Mb, while two per cent were over 8Mb, with the rest unknown.
