Dell equips Glasgow schools with IT in £15.5 million project
By Maggie Holland,
Glasgow City Council has signed a £15.5 million contract with Dell to enhance the teaching and learning experience in the area's 170 schools and 122 nurseries through innovative technology.
The project kicks off at the beginning of April and will be implemented in phases.
As part of the deal, Dell will supply each full-time teacher with a notebook computer in addition to supporting computing networks and servers and providing a service desk to manage schools' ICT requirements.
More than 7,000 computers will be delivered to schools as part of the contract which, in addition to giving students better access to technology, will enable teachers to have greater choice in how and where they work.
"We are currently in the middle of a huge project to modernise our entire pre-12 sector. This contract seeks to complement that by giving all primaries and nurseries access to a state-of-the-art, fully managed ICT service," said Ronnie O'Connor, executive director for education, training and young people at Glasgow City Council.
"We are determined to provide the best possible teaching and learning environment for all our pupils. This deal will ensure that our primary and nursery children - as well as teachers and support staff - can enjoy the most up-to-date ICT provision anywhere in the country."
