Star Alliance passengers benefit from SMS alerts

Passengers flying with any one of the 17 member airlines can sign up to receive SMS or e-mail alerts to help plan their journey.

Passengers flying with any airline that's part of the Star Alliance network can now get up-to-date information on the status of their flights, in virtually any country, via text and e-mail alerts.

The network, which is made up of some 17 member airlines including bmi, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, United and US Airways, is working with travel and transport information specialist OAG to bring the free service to users via the Star Alliance website.

The service, which went live last month, makes use of a mobile terminated (MT) solution, from mBlox, allowing users to better plan their journey by providing key information.

Alert data examples include messages detailing flight status four hours before scheduled take-off, updates informing passengers of delays of 15 minutes or more, connecting flight status and information regarding any terminal changes.

Millions of customers will have the opportunity to benefit from the new service as the Star Alliance network touches more than 16,000 flights to just under 900 destinations on a daily basis.

"Our passengers are increasingly looking for ways to make the most of their time while traveling and this service allows them to do this," said Philip Saunders, vice president of commercial at Star Alliance.

"OAG's partnership with mBlox has provided us with a secure, reliable delivery mechanism for SMS messages that will enable us to further differentiate our service offerings for our airline partners and make our customers' travel time easier."
