Businesses fail to review mobile costs
By Nicole Kobie,
Despite thinking they pay too much for mobile services, a third of managers have not reviewed their mobile bill for two or more years, according to a new study.
A study by research firm YouGov, sponsored by T-Mobile, found that 36 per cent of managers at small and medium enterprises (SMEs) believe they pay too much for mobile services, but many aren't doing anything about it because they find the process too perplexing.
A quarter of respondents said they find mobile purchasing decisions confusing because they don't know enough about mobile technology, while 20 per cent of the 835 respondents said price plans were puzzling.
"As with all costs that businesses face, mobile communications plans should be reviewed on a regular basis," said Derek Williamson, the head of business marketing at T-Mobile UK. "However, as with many decisions relating to technology, it can seem a daunting process and is often delayed or even ignored despite the impact it can have on a business' bottom line."
Despite the confusion, SME managers aren't afraid of new gadgets or innovations. The survey found that 24 per cent thought internet-enabled phones were a must-have for their employees, followed by virtual private networks, wi-fi hotspots, BlackBerrys and satellite navigation.
But 62 per cent of those surveyed said they would be more likely to use wi-fi hotspots if they were included in their mobile price plans.
