Phishing prevention advice website launched
By Rene Millman,
Security company RSA has kicked off a campaign to raise awareness of phishing and other types of online fraud in a bid to protect bank customers.
The campaign, dubbed "Ten Days Against Online Fraud", has been set up with the endorsement of several law enforcement agencies and industry bodies across Europe.
The company has set up a website as part of the campaign offering practical and simple suggestions aimed at online bank customers on how to protect themselves against phishing and other attacks when accessing their accounts online.
The website gives consumers an overview of identity theft, descriptions of the different types of online fraud techniques, tips for consumers and financial institutions, as well as advice on what to do if you are a victim of online fraud.
According to a survey run by the company, customers are less likely to respond to a real email from their bank than a year ago.
The study by the company found that 82 per cent of account holders are less likely to respond to an email from their bank due to scams including phishing - up from 79 per cent in 2005 and 70 per cent in 2004 - and more than half said that they would be less likely to sign-up for or use online banking as a result.
The survey of 1,678 adults in eight countries around the world found that 44 per cent of respondents have become increasingly concerned about other types of attacks, other than phishing, such as trojans and keyloggers.
