Sutton moves servers to Cardiff in £6.5 million deal

IT infrastructure will be moved to Cardiff and the Docklands in a five-year contract with Steria, which could save £1 million for the south London Council.

The council may be in Sutton, but its new £6.5 million IT contract will see its servers and backup storage moved to Cardiff and London's Docklands.

IT services firm Steria will provide support to the south London council as well as new server systems using thin client and virtual server technology - none of which will actually be in Sutton. Service delivery will come from Cardiff, which will be backed up by duplicate facilities in the Docklands to minimise downtime.

"It gives the council improved business continuity to minimise the effects of any equipment failure," said Colin Hall, lead councillor for information technology.

The new system, which will be up and running by October, will allow any of the council's 2,500 registered staff to have mobile access to documents and the intranet.

"The potential this brings to what we can offer our customers and the flexibility it will give our staff is very exciting," said Hall.

The council is expecting to save £1 million over the five-year deal compared to current spending levels.
