HP aims new storage appliance at mid-market

New storage appliance brings enterprise functionality and ease of use to mid-market.

By Rene Millman, 12 Apr 2007 at 12:44

HP has launched a storage system aimed at medium-sized businesses. The StorageWorks 1200 All-in-One Storage System (HP AiO1200) is fourth storage product for the lower end of the market that the company has rolled-out.

The appliance comes as a 2U-sized rackmount unit with a 12 drive array with up to 9TB of capacity and SATA or serial-attached SCSI (SAS) options. The box runs Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 and the Microsoft iSCSI Software Target. It also includes setup and migration wizard support for Microsoft Exchange 2007 so customers can move from direct-attached to network storage for email servers. The company said the unit can provision iSCSI storage for servers running both the 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003.

Urs Renggli, who has just been appointed director of worldwide SMB activities within HP's Technology Solutions Group, said that the company is looking lower end of the market for revenue growth.

"The business-to-business technology market at a tipping point where spending among small and medium-size businesses is growing faster than spending among enterprise businesses," said Renggli.
