    Visa glitch hits customers

Technical error in credit card transaction processing leads to customers purchases being wrongfully declined.

By Nicole Kobie, 16 Apr 2007 at 18:33

Hundreds of Visa's European credit card customers' purchases were wrongfully declined following a technical glitch on Friday morning.

The credit card company said that technical problems in their card transaction processing led to some card transactions being declined. The glitch has now been fixed, the company said.

"Immediate action was taken to rectify the issue and a full service was quickly resumed," a spokesperson said in a statement. "We apologise to any Visa cardholders affected and would take this opportunity to reassure cardholders that Visa regards reliability of the system as paramount."

While Visa Europe could not confirm what the cause of the problem was or how many customers were affected, media reports have suggested it was in the hundreds.

Northern and Central European countries were most affected, but some UK customers also reported having transactions declined.
