Intel has launched a new storage server which is the industry's first to be based on quad-core processors. The server is aimed at medium-sized businesses and branch offices.

The SSR212MC2 Storage Server is a rack-mountable 2U, 12-drive appliance and comes with a choice of Serial-Attached SCSI (SAS) or high-capacity Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives.

The server can configured for a broad range of enterprise and small business storage uses, including NAS, SAN and application servers.

Intel said that several companies are supporting the storage server including, Microsoft, FalconStor, Open-E, Open SuSE, RedHat and Wasabi Systems. The company has also worked with hardware vendors Emulex and Mellanox to enable a range of network connectivity options, such as Fibre Channel and InfiniBand.

The appliance also has options to add dual and quad port Intel PRO Server Ethernet adapters for increased bandwidth through bonding of ports, or reliability via failover.

The server is being sold through Intel's channel partners with a recommended price of $2,800 with no RAID controller and $3,600 with the Intel SRCSAS144e RAID Controller.
