Security top concern for European companies
By Rene Millman,
Security is the number one concern for European IT managers and directors, according to a new study.
The Pressure Point Index survey of 700 IT directors and managers across Europe, carried out by Benchmark Research, found that 38 per cent of respondents thought security was a very serious worry. The next most serious concern of IT directors - the cost of downtime - was rated as a very serious concern by only 27 per cent of respondents.
The survey revealed that European countries differ over levels of concern about IT security, 74 per cent of French respondents scored security as a very serious worry - the highest score in the entire survey. While only 13 per cent of Germans found it a very serious worry. Germany was the only country in the survey to be more likely to perceive IT security as 'not a concern at all' rather than 'a serious concern'.
"IT departments clearly have a lot to be anxious about, and it is becoming apparent that security is the main IT concern across Europe", said Chris Coggrave, HP EMEA managing practice principal for Security Services.
The survey, commissioned by HP found that 39 per cent of Eastern European respondents scored security as a very serious worry, with Italy scoring 25 per cent. With the exception of Eastern European countries, the security threat is seen as most likely to come from an external source. In Eastern Europe, data integrity was ranked as the biggest security threat, with external threats coming second.
