Council offers election results by text message

South Oxfordshire District Council to use SMS to alert registered users of the results of today's polls.

By Nicole Kobie, 3 May 2007 at 17:18

An Oxfordshire council will be alerting some residents of the outcome of today's local elections by text message.

Voters in South Oxfordshire District Council have until midnight to register to receive the poll results by SMS to their phones. The text will be sent tomorrow morning, the council said.

The council used Text Message Server Software from Avanquest Solutions to manage the SMS communications.

"TMS was quick to install, easy to deploy and works seamlessly with our email system," said Simon Turner, ICT manager at the district council, in a statement. "Adding SMS means we can offer a wider range of communication choices to our customers."

To register, text the word ELECTIONS followed by a space then the ward number to 80010, or text ELECTIONS 30 to be sent all the results for the area. Registrations for email alerts are also available via the council's website.
