Faster speeds mean savings for Leicester
By Nicole Kobie,
Leicester has linked up its 150 satellite local authority offices using an ntl:Telewest Business 10Mbps network for less than its old 2Mbps connection.
After four years, the cost savings will make up for the undisclosed initial investment, according to the city council.
"Our old 2Mbps connection could not provide us with the speed and business continuity capabilities we require," said Peter Kay, infrastructure manager of Leicester City Council, in a statement. "The revenue cost of our new 10Mbps network is significantly cheaper, meaning public money can be put to better use, and within four years we expect our investment to be paid back."
The city council implemented the ethernet-based virtual private network to allow faster access and secure remote working for the 54 councillors and 15,000 staff located across the city.
"ntl:Telewest Business has improved the way in which our staff work and ensured that our network is future-proof, capable of growing with the council," said Kay.
Because the new system uses two separate fibre paths, the council is protected against downtime in case one connection is damaged.
"With 15,000 staff and a large number of sites, it is critical that our network has total resilience as our community relies on us to provide vital services," Kay said.
