Businesses won't put up with bad ISPs

The corporate world is mirroring the fickle world of the consumer when it comes to switching internet service providers (ISPs) according to new research from Point Topic.

By Maggie Holland, 10 May 2007 at 16:27

Businesses will no longer tolerate below-par activity from their internet service provider (ISP), with 12 per cent of them having changed provider in the last six months and just under a quarter suggesting they may go down the same road in the next six months, according to the latest research from Point Topic.

In terms of disgruntlement, the most unhappy users stem from Pipex-owned Bulldog and Orange, with more than 40 per cent of their respective customers saying that they are 'very' or 'fairly' likely to give their ISP the chop soon.

Priorities appear to have changed for businesses in the last year, according to the research. While service reliability is still top of the agenda, price is no longer one of the main deciding factors.

"We believe this reflects the fact that more and more businesses are relying on the internet for business critical services and applications," says Point Topic's Dr Katja Mueller.

"If the people in your office can't get their e-mail, or if your warehouse can't access the stock control system then your business suffers financially."

Mueller added: "Increasingly companies recognise this and are prepared to pay for services that ensure continuity and offer a level of guarantee when something does go wrong. Particularly someone to talk to about the problem and the feeling that the ISP has heard them and is doing something about it, it's more of a partnership these days."
