Nokia equips phones with energy-saving alerts

The mobile phone manufacturer ultimately plans to include the alerts in all of its devices.

Nokia is adding alerts to its phone that remind people to unplug their chargers when the battery if full, in a move the mobile device giant believes could potentially save enough energy to power some 85,000 homes every year.

The first models to incorporate the new alert are Nokia's new 1200, 1208 and 1650, but the company plans to eventually incorporate the innovation across its portfolio.

Nokia and other mobile players agreed to beef up their responsibilities towards the safeguarding the environment earlier this year and today's news marks the first fruits of this pledge.

"Around two-thirds of the energy used by a mobile phone is lost when it is unplugged after charging but the charger itself is left in a live socket," said Kirsi Sormunen, vice president of environmental affairs at Nokia.

"We want to reduce this waste and are working on reducing to an absolute minimum the amount of energy our chargers use. The new alerts also play an important role, encouraging people to help us in this goal by unplugging their chargers."
