Nominet launches UK web best practice challenge

The UK's internet movers and shakers will descend on the Houses of Commons next week as part of Nominet's best practice challenge.

On Tuesday next week, internet registry Nominet will host an event at the Houses of Commons which will mark the start of its UK best practice challenge.

The challenge is aimed at encouraging web leaders in this country to share their knowledge and expertise with other players so that everyone can benefit from their experience.

Traditionally, the UK has been very modest about showcasing its web successes or, to a certain extent, embracing the advice that other countries have to offer from their experience, according to Nominet's chief executive, Lesley Cowley.

"One if the things that I felt was missing from the last Internet Governance Forum (IGF) meeting in Athens was people sharing practical examples and best practice with other people in other places," she said.

"The UK has a lot of best practice to share - security expertise, innovation, highly competitive markets, excellent consumer choice, low barriers to entry and leading examples of self and co-regulation. The best practice challenge aims to draw out these examples and showcase them both in the UK and to an international audience at the next IGF meeting which will take place in Rio de Janeiro in November.

The Rt Hon Margaret Hodge MBE MP, Minister for Industry and the Regions, will deliver the keynote address at the launch of the event.

Other speakers include Markus Kummer, UN executive coordinator of the IGF and Emily Taylor, member of the IGF's advisory group.

Cowley added: "In this way, we hope to increase business participation in the IGF and show to an international audience that British industry is a leader in helping address issues such as internet safety and security."
