Cabinet Office IT deal to cut costs and emissions
By Nicole Kobie,
The Cabinet Office has signed a £8 million-a-year contract with Fujitsu Services that will cut IT spending by £2.5 million and reduce carbon emission by as much as 300 tons annually, the government department said.
The carbon cuts are entirely from the use of thin-client devices, which use less energy than standard PCs. The new services will also allow for flexible and home working, cutting travel and office space.
"The new Cabinet Office ICT deal is win-win-win, for staff, for taxpayers and the environment," said chief information officer John Suffolk, in a statement.
The deal will also set up a new service called Public Sector Flex, which will offer a shared service to multiple organisations to cut costs through common infrastructure, collaboration and reuse of systems, the Cabinet Office said. The Office of National Statistics is in talks to be one of the first participants.
