IBM takes on social networking
By Nicole Kobie,
Forget Facebook - IBM has announced a new social software for business called IBM Lotus Connections.
The software suite will bring interactive web elements to business, allowing employees to create profiles, bookmarks, communities and blogs in much the same way as web-based social networking sites.
Sites such as Facebook, MySpace and others are often blocked by corporate IT as time and bandwidth wasters, but IBM's offering claims to help organisations build connections to find hidden knowledge within its employee base.
"Our customers are telling us that their users are already using consumer social networking products outside of official corporate portals," said Evan Herbst, managing director of Gemini Systems, an IBM business partner.
Launched in the US this week, the software is available worldwide and will cost $55 (£28) for a limited package or $110 (£55) for the full package.
