Samsung puts 64GB solid state disks into production
By Rene Millman,
Samsung has begun mass production of its new 64GB 1.8in solid state disk (SSD) drives. The new drives are aimed at replacing traditional disks in notebooks.
The new solid state drives consist of 64 8Gb single-cell flash memory chips. The silicon is manufactured using 51nm process technology, which the company said allowed for the fabrication of much smaller parts. Each chip has circuitry that is 1/2500th width of a human hair.
The company said that the new flash disks promised far greater reliability, faster boot times and faster application start-up times than hard disk drives. It said that an SSD can also improve battery life by up to 20 percent in notebooks.
Samsung has already put its 32GB SSD drives into its range of ultra-mobile personal computers and the company reckoned the new drives could even appear in servers.
"We see sharply increasing interest in SSDs among OEMs worldwide amid a growing push to launch premium SSD-based notebooks, particularly in the ultra-mobile category," said Jim Elliott, director of flash marketing at Samsung Semiconductor.
The company expected that sales of the new flash-based drives to increase by 270 per cent between now and 2010. It expected this to be the largest growth segment in the Nand flash industry.
