Wales gets go-ahead for network
By Nicole Kobie,
The European Commission has given Wales approval for a massive public sector ICT network.
The Welsh Assembly is planning a high-bandwidth ICT network to link up government services and public sector bodies such as healthcare, education and local authorities, with bulk buying and shared services keeping costs lower.
The size of the procurement lead the Welsh government to ask for approval in January and the EC has now come back with a positive response, saying the project would not be considered state aid according to European regulations. Suppliers are expected to be announced in the next few months.
"The procurement of this high bandwidth network service will give Wales opportunities to lead the rest of the United Kingdom in 'joined up' government and improved service delivery," said Dr Brian Gibbons, the Welsh minister for economy and transport.
