IT departments impede change in business

Survey of CIOs and IT managers shows they believe their departments lack management skills.

By Nicole Kobie, 28 Jun 2007 at 16:51

Three-quarters of chief information officers (CIOs) and IT managers believe a lack of management skills is hurting their company, according to a new study.

The survey, of networking forum CIO Connect's membership, showed that 73 per cent felt that change management was being impeded by their own IT department's lack of skills. Another 64 per cent said they needed to hire new leaders to ensure programmes were successful.

"This is a very honest and enlightened admission by our members that IT has a fundamental role to play in the evolution of businesses and there is more to be done," commented Nick Kirkland, managing director of CIO Connect.

Over half of the surveyed IT managers said they would be spending more on training to overcome the problem.

"Specialised training is the way forward and I am very encouraged to see that our members recognise this problem and are addressing it with increased training for their teams in the softer skills of project management, leadership and communication," said Kirkland.
