St Helens Council first to achieve ISO standard
By Nicole Kobie,
St Helens Council has become the first local authority in the country to achieve the ISO/ICE 20000 standard for information technology.
The global standard defines ways to effectively deliver managed IT services and is favoured by the Office of Government Commerce (OGC).
The north western council's 60 IT staff have been working toward the standard for the past few years, the council said.
"It's a testament to the hard work of our IT team who bring a wide range of technology and support to staff, which in turn benefits customers who can go on line to access our services," said council leader Brian Spencer in a statement.
The council's IT department is now rated along with the likes of Accenture, Atos Origin, BT Global Services, English Heritage and Fujitsu Services.
The council was audited over six days on the processes it uses to deliver services to its 8,000 staff. The audit covered such areas as their service desk, information security management and budgeting for IT services, said the council's ICT business manager, Ste Sharples.
"Now its full steam ahead keeping on top of technology changes so the council can retain its world class status during its continuing surveillance audits and when it is fully audited again in three years time," said Sharples.
