Vodafone simplifies data roaming charges<br/>
By Maggie Holland,
Vodafone yesterday slashed the cost of data roaming charges to enable businesses and consumers to surf the web, check emails and connect with the office while abroad, taking advantage of speeds of up to 3.6 Mp/sec.
The mobile giant's Vodafone Connect Abroad service replaces complex per-megabyte pricing with a simple flat structure that lets users consume up to 50 MB of data for £8 (€12) during a 24-hour period, after which they are charged standard rates.
Vodafone is positioning the offering, which is available across its subsidiaries in Europe, Egypt, Australia and New Zealand, and with partners in France (SFR), Switzerland (Swisscom), Austria (Mobilkom) and Belgium (Proximus) as a viable alternative to Wi-Fi.
"With Vodafone Connect Abroad, customers can now access internet services on their laptops for a simple, daily rate, competitive to hotel Wi-Fi and DSL services," said Frank Rovekamp, global chief marketing officer of Vodafone.
Vodafone customers with a wireless data product, those who use their handset as a modem or those who have a laptop with an embedded SIM card, can sign-up for the new offering for free. Those using a Vodafone Mobile Connect USB modem or Vodafone Mobile Connect 3G broadband data card will benefit from the type of connectivity they're used to in the UK in countries they're roaming in with an HSDPA network.
The introduction of the new data fees follow a similar move made by Vodafone back in June 2005 when it introduced the new voice roaming tariff, Vodafone Passport.
