Nominet celebrates six millionth .uk domain milestone
By Maggie Holland,
UK domain registry Nominet today announced that it has registered the six millionth .uk domain name, which it believes highlights the increasing business demand for and loyalty to the .co.uk suffix.
The purchase of the Klassikbuilders.co.uk domain by Tony Hunt, a tradesman from Merseyside, concurs with research published by YouGov earlier this year that revealed 72 per cent of web users head for a .uk address rather than a .com one when surfing the web for information.
"I found that not having a website was restricting the growth of my business," said Hunt.
"These days people go straight to the internet to find information - even if they are just looking for a local builder. The website is only a couple of days old, however, I plan to use it as a shop window to let people know what services are available and how they can contact me. I felt that by choosing a .co.uk address, people would be more likely to visit my web site," he added, reiterating the YouGov research's findings that a third of those surveyed believe that local domain names are a must if they are to attract and retain local trade.
Lesley Cowley, chief executive of Nominet, added: "With six million domain names now registered and a large percentage of these linked to e-commerce, it's easy to see the importance of a .co.uk domain name to a business. Local companies such as Klassik Builders are realising the value of a .uk domain name for promoting their business to customers."
