Vodafone adds mobile banking to handsets
By Martine Schroeder,
Vodafone has agreed a deal with mobile banking service MONILINK to allow customers with an internet-capable handset to access their bank accounts from their mobile phones.
The deal is one of several services Vodafone is putting in place to underpin its "Internet On Your Mobile" service, a combination of 3G handsets and browsers that allow access to fully-featured web sites rather than just wap sites or badly reformatted web content.
This new service allows Vodafone customers who bank with various leading banks throughout the UK, such as HSBC and Alliance & Leicester, to check their balance, request a mini-statement and top-up their 'pay as you talk' mobile phone balance.
"With the launch of the Vodafone Internet On Your Mobile we want to give customers access to all the services they see as essential. Banking is one of the most important services that our customers use and by partnering with the MONILINK network we can ensure that all of our customers are able to access their bank accounts on the move, whenever they want," said Al Russell, head of Vodafone's mobile internet effort.
Customers simply register for MONILINK mobile banking by registering their bank or building society account directly from their handset or via a Vodafone web page. After registration, customers are able to connect to their account using a secure application and by entering a unique passcode given to them by their bank or building society.
