EMC unveils updated storage product lines
By Rene Millman,
Storage vendor EMC has shown off its green credentials with a revamp of a number of its product lines, including its Symmetrix storage arrays that it claims will use a third less cooling and power than its rivals.
Its Symmetrix DMX-4 storage array features 4Gbit/sec throughput, a new point-to-point Fibre Channel back end and support for 750GB SATA II disk drives. The firm said the new product was the first array to support both Fiber Channel and SATA in the same array and cut power consumption by 33 per cent as it had to power less disk drive units.
It said the new systems are up to 30 per cent faster in RAID 5 and RAID 6 configurations and offered 33 per cent faster synchronous replication at distances up to 100 kilometres.
Tony Asaro, senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group, said that 750 GB disk drive support creates greater levels of consolidation within the Symmetrix DMX-4 system.
"The consolidation of storage assets is perhaps more important today than ever with the need to reduce power, cooling and floor space," he said.
EMC has also updated its Enginuity storage management software, which it said would improve performance of the storage array by 30 per cent and make local data replication up to ten times faster. The updated version of the software integrates with RSA envision security compliance audit log tool.
EMC also launched its entry-level Rainfinity File Management appliance for file archiving. The device offers policy-based file management support and automated file movement.
The company also unveiled a new version of its Centera content addressed storage platform. This boasted a 67 per cent improvement in energy efficiency and better security and management software.
It updated its Celerra NS 20 and NS40 appliances and added integrated support for iSCSI, NAS and Fiber Channel. It improved the energy efficiency of the Celerra boxes by using 750GB SATA II disks.
