Information Commissioner outsources IT for £7 million

ICO signs five-year outsourcing contract with Alfred McAlpine.

By Nicole Kobie, 17 Jul 2007 at 16:29

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has signed a five-year, £7 million contract to outsource its IT services.

The contract will see IT services firm Alfred McAlpine provide managed services such as a help desk, hosting, disaster recovery, security services and network, server and application management to the ICO's six offices across the UK. The ICO previously outsourced its IT to Fujitsu Services, an ICO spokeswoman said.

The ICO is the independent body which handles data and privacy. As those issues are becoming increasingly important, especially in the face of security breaches, speakers at a forum last week called on the ICO's powers to be strengthened.

The new infrastructure is being designed as a foundation for future development, said Simon Entwisle, chief operating officer at the ICO. "Alfred McAlpine is a very good fit for us in terms of size, culture and experience to support and develop our organisation's secure IT requirements into the future," he said in a statement. "It complements our drive to be more efficient and to provide a first class service to those who come into contact with us."

Being chosen to provide IT services for such a security and privacy focused organisation looks good for Alfred McAlpine, said the firm's managing director. "Winning the contract with the Information Commissioner's Office is testament to our credentials working with clients for whom data protection and compliance in information security are of the utmost importance," said Noel McNulty in a statement.
