Cost trumps environment in IT survey

When buying new equipment, IT managers still focus on cost ahead of security or environmental considerations.

By Nicole Kobie, 18 Jul 2007 at 17:45

Cost and security are more important than environmental concerns when procuring IT equipment, according to a new survey.

Of the 100 UK enterprises surveyed by management software provider firm 1E, some 60 per cent said cost is the top consideration when buying new IT products and services, followed by security at 35 per cent. Environmental concerns came in third at just three per cent.

"Cost should always be relevant," said chief executive Sumir Karayi. "But in reality, being green is not in conflict with cost... technology itself won't change the world, but it can offer a significant emissions savings."

He said that if IT was seen as more of a business driver and was better aligned with a firm's goals, then cost would become less important.

Karayi said that the survey reflected a difference between the US and the UK when it comes to green corporations. "In the US, there's a significant shift to going green," he said. "In the UK, we're just not seeing it."

The study also found that two-thirds of firms surveyed have no formal policy to shut down PCs on evenings and weekends, but that another two-thirds of firms are looking to improve their environmental impact ahead of government regulations.
