Toshiba recalls even more Sony laptop batteries

Laptop computer maker Toshiba has announced a recall of yet more Sony-made laptop computer batteries due to a potential fire risk.

The Japanese electronics firm said it is replacing an estimated 10,000 lithium-ion batteries worldwide after fires erupted in three PCs last year and this year from batteries made in December 2005.

The company believes that only half that number are actually defective, but as a safety measure is recalling the entire production run of 10,000 batteries. A Toshiba spokesman said the recall would affect laptops from the Dynabook, Dynabook Satellite, Satellite and Tecra ranges sold in Japan, the UK, US, Europe, Australia and China.

In September 2006 Toshiba recalled approximately 340,000 laptop batteries made by Sony, at the height of concerns over the safety of Sony-based laptop battery units.

Over the last year, Sony was hit badly by the recall of 9.6 million laptop batteries after incidents in which some burst into flames. High-profile manufacturers to recall Sony-made batteries include Dell, Apple, Acer and Lenovo.
