Laptop prices threatened by component shortage

Supply problems for key parts including screens and batteries will hit retail stocks and could force prices up.

By Reuters, 1 Aug 2007 at 12:10

PC makers are facing a shortage of laptop computer components that is set to worsen over the coming three months, according to a report from semiconductor and electronics market researcher DRAMeXchange.

DRAMeXchange said laptop makers began to experience tight supply of LCD (liquid crystal display) panels, batteries, hard disc drives, casings and optical disc drives last quarter.

"The situation could grow more serious in the third quarter of 2007, as quarterly shipments are expected to exceed 25.6 million, a quarter-on-quarter increase of 14.4 percent," it said.

"Overall, tier-two notebook brands will suffer a more serious impact," DRAMeXchange said. "They will face both rising costs and lower than planned shipment volume due to insufficient quantity of components."
