Symantec updates storage management software

Symantec has unveiled the latest version of its storage resource management product, touting new virtualisation and replication features.

As the latest part of its "Storage United" strategy, the company released version 5 of its Veritas CommandCentral software that runs on Windows, Linux, AIX, Solaris and HP-UX computers. It said the latest release had advanced support for VMware, HDS TagmaStore and IBM SAN Volume Controller and this meant that storage administrators can manage capacity at the application layer in a virtualised environment.

The new software also supports 3PAR, Fujitsu, HP EVA, IBM DS4x00 arrays and NetApp iSCSI storage devices. The new version extends the software's scalability with the suite being able to control over 3,000 servers, six Petabytes of storage and 12,000 switch ports with a single management server.

It has also added support for local and remote replication managers for high availability and disaster recovery architectures such as EMC Symmetrix Remote Data Facility, Clariion Snapshot, MirrorView and Snapview, NetApp SnapMirror and HDS Shadow Image replication software.

The suite has also introduced a comprehensive IT process automation platform with its Veritas Process Automation Manager 5.0. The company said the software enables standardisation of storage management processes, implementation of consistent operational policies and automation of these processes.

"IT organisations need to have visibility and control over their heterogeneous storage infrastructure in order to deliver storage services to the business," said Rob Soderbery, senior vice president of Symantec's Storage Foundation Group.
