MoD gets its own travel site
By Nicole Kobie,
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a five-year deal with Capgemini to design and run an electronic travel booking service.
Government procurement body OGCbuying.solutions awarded the contract, worth an undisclosed amount, to cut travel costs and simplify booking for MoD's 300,000 civil service and armed forces staff around the world. The web-based service will be similar to consumer online travel booking sites, Capgemini said, but will offer additional offers and corporate deals.
"This service is a key component of modernising travel within the Department which will simplify the travel booking process by allowing travel to be arranged online," Group Captain Andy Towler, Defence Travel Modernisation Team Leader, said in a statement.
Capgemini will provide design and implementation, while the travel side will be provided by Carlson Wagonlit Travel and KDS.
While the services could be shared across government departments, at the moment there are no plans to do so, a Capgemeni spokesperson said. "In the longer term, we'd like to think so," he said. "But at the moment, there are no plans."
