Intel ups speed on mid-range desktop chips
By Rene Millman,
Intel is set to bolster its Dual Core range later this month and has plans to do the same with its Core 2 Duo desktop range later in October.
According to roadmaps leaked to the media, processor prices look set to remain stable until later on in the last quarter. The Pentium E2180 processor runs at 2GHz and has 1MB of L2 cache which is shared between the two cores. The chip connects over an 800MHz frontside bus.
This silicon is due to make an appearance on 26 August and sells for $84 (£42). The current 1.8GHz E2160 falls in price to $71, which is what the chip company currently charges for 1.6GHz E2140.
According to Digitimes, Intel is to launch in October an entry-level Core 2 Duo E4600 chip running at 2.4GHz with a 2MB L2 cache, an 800MHz frontside bus for $133 (£67). Its predecessor, the E4500 will see its price drop from $133 (£67) to $113 (£57). The E4400 and E4300 look to be retired from the chip line-up.
