Vodafone ramps up faster mobile broadband

A range of new 3G handsets using High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) to be introduced by mobile operator in order to increase mobile broadband speeds.

By Stephen Quigley, 28 Aug 2007 at 17:25

Vodafone will upgrade its existing network throughout autumn to support a maximum download speed of 7.2Mb/sec, although users are likely to experience between 1.7Mb/sec and 5.5Mb/sec.

Customers who want to benefit from the speeds will be able to buy one of the range of devices from 3 September.

The new technology will download up to 14 times faster than standard 3G, making it possible to download a 5MB file in around seven seconds.

It will also upload up to 10 times faster than the standard 3G service by offering increased speeds of 1.44Mb/sec.

Kyle Whitehill, enterprise business unit director for Vodafone UK said: "More than ever, the speed of our Mobile Broadband service is helping people make work, work around them, wherever they are. These devices are fast but they are also future-proofed - they are ready for our new upgraded network and they are ready for the latest PCs or laptops."

The devices will include a new plug-and-go USB Modem, which is the first 'tri-band 3G' device to be offered in the UK, and two new ExpressCards, one that is plug and go and another that is targeted at corporate customers. Both formats are also backwards compatible using an adaptor which customers can place over the card so it fits the more traditional PC card slots.

The USB modem will be Vodafone's first to operate across three spectrum bands, making it usable in countries such as the US.

Vodafone will begin the upgrade in central London and major UK airports including Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted.
