    Yahoo Mail enhances real-time comms

The latest version of Yahoo's web-based mail product features more ways of putting people in touch with colleagues, family and friends.

By Maggie Holland, 29 Aug 2007 at 13:42

Yahoo has unveiled the latest version of its web mail service which includes beefed up multimedia capabilities in addition to overall performance and speed improvements.

In addition, users in Canada, India, the Philippines and US are able to take advantage of another unique feature by being able to send free text messages mobile phones as well as instant messages to fellow Yahoo Messenger and Windows Live Messenger fans.

Users can covert their emails into IM chats or flip to text message-based conversations when friends get online or become mobile. Beefed up search functionality also lets account holders obtain a narrower set of search results depending on whether they're looking for messages grouped by sender, folder, date, attachment type and message status.

Personalisation is also another option with the new mail product, with users able to select a colour theme from a choice of six customisable shades.

The latest member of the Yahoo Mail family also gives users tabbed navigation, a reading pane, an integrated calendar and an RSS reader.

It's almost a decade since the original Yahoo Mail product launched and the service now boasts hundreds of millions of users, with the latest refinements likely to help ramp up numbers further.

"We have always been focused on making it easy for people to connect to those who matter most to them, and during the beta testing period of the new Yahoo Mail, we were able to incorporate a number of enhancements based on valuable feedback from our users," said John Kremer, vice president of Yahoo Mail.

"Now, with the all-new Yahoo Mail, we're creating a more social email experience. In addition, we wanted to make sure that people have the best possible web mail experience regardless of their geographic location, preferences or system, so we're continuing to offer our trusted Yahoo Mail Classic interface."
