    SWSoft updates Virtuozzo virtualisation app

The company behind the popular Parallels desktop virtualisation product releases a beta of the latest version of its virtualisation tool for data centres.

SWsoft has today unveiled a beta of the latest version of its operating system (OS) virtualisation software for data centres, Virtuozzo.

The virtualisation software company has made inroads into a market dominated by leader VMware, offering the ability to dynamically partitions a single Windows or Linux operating system instance as opposed to an entire server environment.

The beta of Virtuozzo V4 promises to address common issues associated with performance, density, usability and infrastructure compatibility with new or improved features and functionality.

A redesigned user interface has been designed to offer more centralised access to OS-based virtualisation resources, including streamlined installation wizards, application templates and sample containers.

Real-time backups across Linux and Windows platforms have been enabled with the addition of Windows Server 2003 and Red Hat clustering services. And the introduction of the ability to arrange and manage virtual containers and Virtuozzo servers according to either the hardware infrastructure, or grouped logically according to user preference promises to enhance management flexibility of virtual environments.

Serguei Beloussov, SWsoft chief executive told IT PRO this latest release will give those enterprises looking to gain better control over their data centre environments greater control over the dynamic resource provisioning using OS-based virtualisation techniques.

AET Films, a specialist plastic films developer and manufacturer has been a production Virtuozzo user and testing version 4 beta. Spokesman, Chris Stucker said the availability and management enhancements have helped the company increase data centre productivity and efficiency.

Stucker said it has been able to "run 25 or more Virtuozzo containers on a single server at speeds that rival that of real dedicated boxes" that have "dramatically simplified our IT infrastructure by reducing OS and server sprawl and saved us thousands in hardware and operating costs."

Virtuozzo 4 will be available for public beta testing by the end of September, with general availability expected later this year. The vendor is inviting users to sign up for the beta programme, while it will be demonstrating the new version at this week's VMworld 2007 in San Francisco.
