    Micro Focus updates application modernisation

Acucorp interoperability suite gets new Java display engine, Windows x64 ports.

By Miya Knights, 28 Sep 2007 at 10:58

Micro Focus has launched its first product, extend8, from newly acquired Acucorp, designed to minimise the need for reengineering COBOL applications.

The Acucorp extend8 Interoperability Suite of application modernisation products includes a new Java display engine, called AcuXUI, for the company's graphical technology and enhancements to the recently released database management system for the Vision file system interface, AcuXDBC.

Micro Focus said, with new ports to the Windows x64 platform and over 100 other enhancements in the development and deployment products, extend8 will increase programmer productivity, provide superior performance and extend the lifecycle and use of data access systems.

The new AcuXUI engine allows users of ACUCOBOL-GT graphical technology to use Java as their display engine to provide a more modern look and feel to their interface and allow them to create graphical user interfaces (GUI) for applications that are portable to any platform running a Java Runtime Environment. Micro Focus said users can deploy their graphical applications to UNIX, Linux, Macintosh or web browser environments, with no changes to their code.

Stuart McGill, Micro Focus chief technology officer said extend8 would unlock more value from an organisation's IT systems.

"All too often, we hear of the need to replace systems that have been in place for a number of years," said McGill. "extend8 allows businesses to avoid the huge cost and risk of such projects by providing a straight-forward modernisation solution, easily adaptable to a variety of platforms. This is an important development in the Micro Focus product portfolio and clearly demonstrates our commitment to support our Acucorp customers going forward."

Micro Focus acquired Acucorp in May 2007.
