Yahoo to axe podcast search site next month
By Stuart Turton,
Yahoo has begun wielding the axe on some of its less-popular services, revealing that its podcast search and rate service will be dumped next month.
The service will shut down on 31 October according to a notice on the site. It has been running for two years and was established to take advantage of the sudden interest in podcasts brought about by the success of the iPod and the ability to listen to them on the move.
However, the site has failed to find an audience and in August was Yahoo's least trafficked site, with visitors falling off by 20 per cent from the same time the year before, according to figures from Hitwise.
The closing of the site comes about as the result of a 100-day review instigated by Yahoo chairman Jerry Yang, as he attempts to turn about the company's ailing fortunes after replacing former chairman Terry Semel in June.
Postings on the company's blog suggest this will not be the last service to be dumped, with its music subscription service also thought to be high on Yang's list of targets.
