Storage Expo: IT managers missing out on email savings
By Miya Knights at Storage Expo,
A survey out today has found 63 per cent of UK IT managers are deploying more than one email system in their organisation.
A proliferation of point systems, including anti-virus and spam, email continuity and policy management tools found by the independent survey of over 100 IT managers were responsible for 30 per cent, who rank cost as the biggest inhibitor when determining their archive policy.
This is despite the fact the research further revealed that consolidating multiple systems into one cold save as much as 80 per cent of an organisation's annual email expenditure.
The survey was carried out by market researcher, E-media and commissioned by email management systems software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider, Mimecast for the Storage Expo event currently being held in London.
Mimecast chief executive, Peter Bauer told IT PRO it makes good business sense to archive all email, but that many organisations only manage to do so with 14 per cent of emails.
"Given the increasing compliance pressures most companies face, why wouldn't you want to archive all your emails?" he asked. "We found the findings fascinating as it makes common business sense to have one unified system to do this. Why wouldn't you?"
But he said that although unified email management was seen to be prohibitive in terms of cost to attain, the survey findings pointed to potential cost savings that are hard to ignore, particularly when the potential for the SaaS delivery model of its and competitive providers' business models is taken into consideration.
