Storage Expo: BakBone extends backup products

Storage vendor introduces continuous data protection features to its product range.

By Miya Knights at Storage Expo, 18 Oct 2007 at 15:00

Data protection provider, BakBone is turning its attention to business continuity for the smaller to medium sized business (SMB) with the release of a new version of its flagship back-up product.

NetVault: Backup 8 will be generally available next Monday and introduces the concept of integrated continuous data protection capabilities (CDP) for the first time, as well as an expanded feature set.

Andrew Brewerton, BakBone's newly appointed technical director for the Europe, Middle East and Africa region told IT PRO this new version of NetVault: Backup also represented the next step in the vendor's integrated data protection strategy (IDP) that allows for plug-and-play functionality between heterogeneous storage tools on the NetVault platform.

"Our architecture is very modular," he said. "We designed it with our platform at the core, so that other storage tools - and not just our own - could plug in around it. This also allows us to make major releases every six to nine months rather that the normal annual schedule and respond to customer needs more quickly."

He pointed to a new feature in the Backup 8 product that reflects the ever-decreasing backup windows for those SMBs who may not be able to invest in CDP technologies: restartable backup allows organisations to interrupt tape backups without losing data and to return to the same point to continue the operation at another time.

"SMBs often don't have built-replication or storage arrays and still very much rely on backing up to tape. This feature will help overcome hardware and networking issues," he said.

Brewerton also revealed BakBone's new offering, NetVault: TrueCDP will be released in three weeks to add to the vendor's range of simple, but scaleable products.

TrueCDP promises to enhance scheduled backup cycles, which provide only one recovery point every 24 hours, by offering recovery points within seconds and has been developed as part of the vendor's Backup 8 platform.

It is designed to meet recovery point and recovery time objectives with much more granular levels of control, with such features as any-point-in-time recoveries, across multiple platforms.
