Public Sector Roundup: Land Registry pulls web docs

Potential for fraud leads Land Registry to take documents offline, Leeds uses discovery to help with XP migration, and Stoke and Civica sign £1 million e-procurement deal.

Land Registry takes documents off the web

The Land Registry has pulled scanned documents from its website, such as mortgage deeds and leases, in response to concerns about potential misuse. Members of the public requiring copies of any documents will now have to do so in writing.

Mike Westcott-Rudd, the head of corporate legal services, said: "People can be confident that their property ownership is safeguarded by the state because if someone is a victim of fraud, we have a comprehensive compensation scheme in place to put things right... However, fraud is a very serious issue and Land Registry gives it the highest priority. It is important to strike a balance between on the one hand making the system accessible, and simplifying the process of conveyancing, and on the other hand ensuring that appropriate safeguards are written into the system."

Leeds migrates to XP

Leeds City Council has used Centennial Software's Discovery to help in its upgrade of desktop and laptop computers to Windows XP for 12,000 users. Manually auditing machines and the software on them would have taken months, so the council opted to for a software asset management (SAM) strategy to automate the process and help cut costs.

Phil Wright, the council's configuration manager, said: "The installation of on our predominantly Novell-based network went without a hitch and we started auditing within 12 hours. Discovery provided visibility of assets we were not previously aware of and as a result enabled us to feel entirely in control of the migration."

Following the migration, the council will continue to use the SAM as it works toward ITIL compliance.

Civica in £1 million council deal

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has signed a deal with Civica for a four-year, £1 million e-procurement and financial management program.

Based on Civica's Authority Financials and eProcurement, it will integrate with the I&DeA marketplace procurement system.

Paul Atkins, a project manager at the council, said: "The Authority Financials platform enables us to set up organisation-wide processes that reduce costs and manage our partners and suppliers better. Most exciting of all, with 'commitment accounting' and more flexible reporting capabilities, we will be giving councillors, officers and local people an up-to-date picture of how we are investing in local services."
