    Lenovo launches into workstation market

PC maker's new 'ThinkStation' branded product line is first since acquiring IBM's Personal Computing Division two years ago.

Lenovo today launched a PC workstation product line, branded 'ThinkStation' and clocking up a number of firsts.

The ThinkStation S10 and D10 workstation PCs are Lenovo's first entry in the workstation market, as well as the first product launch since it acquired IBM's Personal Computing Division in 2005 and the first 'Think' brand addition introduced in five years.

The new workstations are also based on the first processors to use 45-nanometer semiconductor production process featured in Intel's upcoming quad-core Xeon processor 5400 series and Intel's Core 2 Extreme processors.

Also fitted with the latest graphic cards from NVIDIA, Lenovo said the specifications of its new workstation lineup would be most attractive to those industries and organisations with high-performance computing needs, using computer aided design (CAD) packages or for compute-intensive calculations or simulations.

The new lineup also comes with dual Gigabit Ethernet and multiple slots, bays and USB ports to expand its specification capabilities.

Peter Schrady, vice president and general manager of Lenovo's emerging products group told journalists gathered for the launch event today that the PC maker felt compelled to enter the workstation market and fill the gap at the top-end of its portfolio.

He said that growth in the workstation market was particularly strong in Europe and in double digits in Asia and that Lenovo would be looking to capitalise on the higher margin business opportunities.

"We will sell ThinkStations through our existing primary channels to market, as well as direct to our large enterprise customers," he said.

Schrady also made much of the ThinkStation's 'green' credentials, stressing 80 per cent power efficiency, 50 per cent recycled plastics content and new, patented air-cooling capabilities that has the effect of making its systems run more quietly and reliably.

The Thinkstation workstations will be available in the New Year direct from Lenovo itself or through its existing business partners. Pricing for the S10 model will start at €829 (£577) and €1,199 (£834.53) for the D10 model.
