O2 prepares for iPhone launch with extra staff
By Maggie Holland,
O2 is increasing its headcount to cope with the additional demand for its services likely to come about as a result of the Friday's UK launch of Apple's iPhone.
The mobile operator is creating a dedicated iPhone customer services unit, comprised of some 1,000 staff, in its Glasgow call centre as well as beefing up iPhone specific resources across its other call centre operations.
These new call centre customer services units will be staffed by 700 new recruits, with the remaining numbers made up by existing employees.
In total, O2 plans to swell its UK ranks by 1,427 people, with the 727 employees not headed for customer services destined for O2 retail stores to help provide customers with specialist knowledge of the new handset and its capabilities.
"The iPhone is a revolutionary device and we need to ensure a fantastic overall experience for customers using it," said Mark Stansfeld, O2 UK's sales director. "So we are investing in training and increasing our workforce to ensure this good experience from the moment you purchase the iPhone through to activation and on-going support."
