MagicTaxi drives green web activity
By Maggie Holland,
Web search company MagicTaxi has vowed to do its bit to help offset carbon emissions by donating some of its profits to help plant trees.
Each time a user conducts a web search or shops via its site, MagicTaxi will donate 50 per cent of the advertising and commission revenue received to the Woodland Trust, in addition to providing useful tips for individuals on how to reduce their own carbon footprints on its internet tool bar.
"The next six weeks are the busiest for online searching and shopping," the company said in a statement. "According to the Centre for Economic and Business Research, the average British family will spend over £448 on food, drink, toys and other gifts this Christmas. If this was spent through MagicTaxi it would plant five trees and help to offset one ton of carbon."
The proceeds will go towards planting trees in the UK so that users have the opportunity to actually visit the woodland being created as a result of their efforts, according to MagicTaxi.
"MagicTaxi has added an innovative yet practical dimension to the way individuals can help the environment. By continuing to search and shop online, but using MagicTaxi, people can help reduce their carbon footprint and help build sustainable woodland throughout the UK," said Clare Allen, head of corporate partnerships for the Woodland Trust.
"The UK is the least wooded country in Europe, planting trees with the Woodland Trust won't just absorb carbon, it will help to create more habitat for our rare and endangered wildlife."
