    Data centres go third party

Firms are looking to managed services to expand their data centres, according to new research.

Security and space concerns are driving UK firms to third party data centres, according to a new survey.

IT services firm COLT surveyed 400 European firms, finding three-quarters of UK companies expected to increase their use of third party data centre services, with half already using them.

Indeed, 76 per cent of respondents in the UK said that a secondary data centre will become necessary for businesses.

The study also found that over seven out of 10 respondents in the UK believe space, security and systems management were the biggest challenges with an in-house data centre. Power and cooling was also a major issue, cited by 66 per cent of respondents.

The UK firms paid the highest attention to reducing their carbon footprint, with 48 per cent seeing it as a key challenge - the highest response across Europe.

"The research confirms that environmental considerations are rising up the IT agenda," said Geoffry Gilton, head of products for COLT Managed Services. "We are finding that businesses are increasingly interested in reducing their carbon footprint when looking for a third party data centre provider."
