Skype's 0207 customers offered lifeline

Voipfone is offering "a free rescue service" for the 10,000 Skype customers who've been stripped of their London telephone numbers.

Last week, Skype informed thousands of its customers that they would lose their 0207 numbers with only a month's notice. The move infuriated customers who use the service for business, claiming that it would cost them thousands of pounds to reprint stationery and inform customers of their new number at such short notice.

Now, Voipfone says it is offering to transfer the Skype customers to its network free of charge.

"This must be distressing, expensive and inconvenient times for all Skype customers with 0207 numbers," claims Colin Duffy, CEO of Voipfone. "With companies facing mail shots, business cards and stationery that are all having to be scrapped, we are really pleased to be in a position to help."

Voipfone charges customers £1.99 a month to rent the number, which is cheaper than the £10 a quarter Skype charges for its SkypeIn service.
