Parallels, the utility software that allows Apple users to run Microsoft Windows operating system (OS) side-by-side with Mac OS X on any Intel-powered Mac, will tomorrow launch an updated version, bundled with extra tools.

The release of Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac Premium Edition, priced at £59.99, allows virtual computers of Windows to run on a Mac and includes third-party software utilities to help protect the virtual instances and ensure their smooth running.

"Maintaining and securing a Windows virtual computer is every bit as important as it is for a physical computer," said Serguei Beloussov, chief executive of SWsoft, the maker of Parallels software.

The Premium Edition update supports the latest compatible build of Parallels Desktop 3.0 on Apple's recently launched OS, Leopard and will be available as a free update for all existing Parallels Desktop 3.0 users.

The upgrade also comes with Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 to protect the virtual Windows environment against the viruses, spyware, spam and malware that could potentially harm the main Mac OS system.

Backup and disaster recovery software Acronis True Image 11 Home will also be included, to enable users to back up individual files on their Windows virtual machine or take an entire image of their Windows virtual computer for storing on external drives, DVDs and off-site computers via file transfer protocol (FTP).

Acronis Disk Director Suite also forms part of the bundle, offering the ability to resize, move, copy, split and merge virtual disk partitions, while protecting the virtual system from data loss. It includes a boot manager that allows users to boot other operating systems, such as Linux, inside their Windows virtual machine.
